Woodland's History

Woodland Middle School is 50 years old!! Happy Birthday, WMS.

Woodland Junior High was completed in 1955 at a cost of $19,293,626. Woodland Junior High was opened in December of 1955 as a grade four, five, six school. There were a total of 1,600 students enrolled. In 1961, the school was occupied by grades six-nine. Grades four and five were moved to the elementary schools that year. In 1963, Woodland truly became a Junior High School when grade six was moved to the elementary school leaving grades seven-nine.

Woodland Junior High made its first steps towards a Middle School when, in the fall of 1989, the ninth grade was moved to the High School. The next fall the first sixth grade class entered Woodland Middle School. Woodland is now a true Middle School with grades six-seven-eight in attendance.

In the spring of 2000 Woodland proudly unveiled its new Library/Media Center on the site of what used to be a Courtyard.  The library is state of the art complete with video conference capabilities, digital video equipment, carpeting and air conditioning.

In 2003 a new 12 room wing was added with a guidance suite, House I Assistant Principal's office, psychologist's office, a new computer lab , and a science lab.
