 Homework Policy

WHY HAVE HOMEWORK?
Homework is important for a variety of reasons.  It teaches responsibility and organizational skills, and it reviews and supplements what has been done in school each day.  It reinforces learning, develops work and study skills, and helps students to prepare for upcoming work.

WHEN WILL HOMEWORK BE ASSIGNED?
Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday and, on average, will take approximately an hour to complete.  Extra time should be allowed for projects and for test study.  Homework assigned on a daily basis may include: Math, Spelling, Current Events, Language, and work on long range Science and Social Studies units.

WHAT ABOUT TESTS?
Tests will be given at the end of each unit of study, and students will receive appropriate notice of upcoming tests.  All major test papers must be reviewed and signed by a parent and returned to class the following day.  Make-ups for absentees will be determined on a case by case basis, according to  circumstances.  They will be given on the day the student returns to school after a short absence.

STUDENT HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES:
-all assignments will be completed and submitted on time
-students will do homework on their own and to the best of their ability
-students are responsible for making up assignments due to absence
-all work will be neatly done and represent the student’s best effort

WHEN HOMEWORK IS NOT DONE:
-parents will be asked to sign completed assignments daily
-an option may be loss of free time
-three missing homeworks in a subject during one marking period will result in a lower grade on the report card

PARENT HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES:
Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience.  I ask that you make it a top priority by providing the necessary supplies, environment, regularly scheduled time, and by offering praise and support.  Please contact me with any problems.

TEACHER HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES:
I will check all homework and keep a record of assignments– both complete and incomplete.  Because I recognize the importance and value of homework, I will praise and offer recognition for students who do their homework well.

This will be an exciting and productive school year, and  I look forward to working together in a partnership to make it so.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Please read and discuss this policy with your child.
