W.T. Clarke High School student Yuktha Chiguripati was among 23 students at the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair that qualified for the upcoming Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Yuktha earned first place in the second round of the Long Island fair’s earth and environmental sciences category with her project “Pretreatment of Brassica rapa with Pyrabactin increases Tolerance to Drought.” First place winners from each category are now eligible to advance to the international level competition, to be held in Phoenix from May 12-17.

The first round was held in February, when 81 schools were represented with more than 400 individual and team projects. At least 25 percent of projects in each category moved on to the second round. The international competition is administered by the Society for Science & the Public with about 1,800 students from more than 75 countries competing for cash prizes.

The district congratulates Yuktha for her hard work and wishes her well in the next level.
