Visit from Vietnam Vets

In accordance with their curriculum, W. T. Clarke Middle School eighth-graders received a special visit from members of the Vietnam War Veterans Association.
Coinciding with their social studies and English Language Arts classes, eighth-graders are learning about the Vietnam War. In their social studies classes, students learned about the history of the war while reading an examination of life in Vietnam through the novel “Inside Out and Back Again,” by Thanhha Lai.
During the Veterans’ visit, the servicemen participated in small group discussions emphasizing the hardship of the war with Charlie Polley’s class. In addition, they spoke to the entire eighth-grade sharing their memories and experiences and circulated authentic materials used by the soldiers such as helmets, photo albums and vests.
The Veterans also held a question and answer session informing students about life in Vietnam.
